Communicating with Clients with Dementia- Tip #1

How we communicate with someone with Alzheimer’s and related Dementias is very important. Alzheimer’s and related dementia affect a part of the brain that allows a person to communicate and remember information. An individual over time loses verbal communication abilities and may become frustrated trying to explain their wants and needs.

First off try to avoid reasoning or arguing with someone who has Dementia. It is always better to accept and agree rather than argue. You will never win an argument with someone with Dementia, and it may lead to agitation and aggression. Agree with the person, try distraction, move on to another topic or activity.
