Communicating with Clients with Dementia- Tip #3

As caregivers, our body language and facial expressions are very important. Clients experience changing visual spatial fields, so we always want to make eye contact and get at their level when we are talking with them. Don’t stand above them and talk down to them. It is essential that we do not approach the client from the back but always from the front so as not to frighten them. The person with dementia may strike out at an individual who approaches from behind or from the side as they may be startled.
