The hustle and bustle of the holiday season brings joy and celebration, but often, with the festivities come challenges. When caring for clients or loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, the thought of the holidays may be overwhelming. Caregivers may think that holiday preparation is more than they are capable of handling. Individuals with the disease may find much that accompanies traditional celebrations to be stressful and confusing. As caregivers we need to look at traditions and determine what our clients and loved ones are still able to maintain and what they can easily let go. The key to making the holidays as pleasant and stress free as possible for the person with dementia, as well as for friends and family, is planning and managing expectations.
